How much does it cost to repair ABS wiring?

Anti-Lock braking, or ABS systems, use wheel speed monitors and other sensors to ensure your car's wheels do not lock up and skid in the event of harsh braking, especially when driving on wet or loose surfaces.

Damage to the wiring connecting any of the ABS modules or sensors could cause various issues, including intermittent or constant faults. In this article, we’ll take a look at some possible causes and the likely cost to repair them.

ABS Wiring harness repair cost

If a new ABS wiring harness is needed, expect to pay between £290 and £420, depending on the make and model of vehicle, and if the entire harness needs replacing or not.

In some cases, the electrical connectors that enable ABS modules to connect to the car's ECU can become damaged. The cost is often around the same price for these; £300 - £430, depending on how easy the part is to change.

In many cases, with electrical faults, the cost to diagnose and find the cause of the issue can be as much as the repair itself. That’s because they can be hard to pinpoint and often take a few hours of diagnosis.

ABS sensor repair cost

ABS sensors are a fairly common repair item; budget between £65 and £250 each to have them replaced. On some makes of cars, only manufacturer made parts will give the correct readings.

If new ABS sensors do not fix the issue, sometimes a new sensor ring on the driveshaft or wheel hub is needed. These can cost anywhere from £50 to £400, depending on what part needs to be changed.

ABS module repair cost

The ABS is powered by the ABS module or ABS pump, which supplies the hydraulic force to each wheel as needed. They can be expensive to replace; typically costing between £600 and £2,000 depending on the make and model.

In some cases, internal components can be replaced to repair the ABS module. Although this is a specialist job, it can sometimes be more cost-effective than replacement.

What is the ABS wiring harness?

Any electrical components need wiring for power and communication with the other components in the car. The ABS module, for instance, communicates with the main ECU, all 4 wheel speed sensors, and any other traction control components.

Because there are so many connections, the wiring is bundled into groups to make it easier to manage and route through the car, with specific connectors for the various components, this is known as wiring harnesses.

Can you drive with damage to the ABS wiring harness?

You should not drive with ABS issues, including wiring problems, as it is a vital safety feature.

Wiring issues are likely to present in unpredictable and irregular ways, as the cables move around with the vibration of the car. This means it's possible that you could lose the anti lock braking effect at any point.
