How much does it cost to repair a Ford Focus bonnet lock?

Issues with bonnet latches, switches or cables can be incredibly frustrating to live with, often taking extra time to check the bonnet is shut, or making it impossible to open the bonnet should you need to.

In this guide, we’ll run through how bonnet latches work and what tends to go wrong with them.

How much does it cost to repair a bonnet latch issue?

Bonnet latches usually only comprise a few components, so they don’t tend to cost much to fix, though prices will differ depending on what kind of garage you take the car to.

The cost to replace a Ford Focus bonnet latch is typically between £90 and £160, depending on the age of your car and the hourly rate charged by the garage.

A new bonnet release cable requires a bit more work to fit, so budget between £190 and £340 for that.

Another issue could just be that the bonnet sensor is broken, expect to pay between £120 and £180 to have this fixed.

How do bonnet latches work?

A bonnet latch generally comprises one or two small sprung mechanisms that lock in a catch pin or bar on the bonnet. This allows you to simply push the bonnet into position and be sure it is latched firmly.

When you pull the bonnet release lever, a cable running from this handle to the bonnet latch mechanism operates the sprung hook and releases the bonnet latch.

Can I repair a bonnet latch myself?

If your bonnet latch is sticking and not releasing properly, you can try cleaning and re-greasing the mechanism.

To do this, clean the bonnet latch mechanism of any old and dried grease, and reapply some new lithium grease or a similar product.

With the bonnet open, pull the bonnet release lever a few times to work in the grease, and then check that the bonnet shuts and opens normally. If the latch grease being dry and old was the issue, this should help the bonnet release easier.

Why does my car say the bonnet is open when it's not?

Most modern cars have a sensor on the bonnet latch, to detect when the bonnet is open. This is a useful feature for both safety and security purposes.

However, just like the bonnet latch, these switches can become stiff or have the grease dry out. This means that even though the bonnet is shut, the switch is not activating normally to tell the car it's closed.

In some cases a similar process can be used to clean the bonnet switch, using electrical contact cleaner to free the switch off. If the problem persists, though, it may need a new bonnet switch.

Can I drive with a faulty bonnet latch or switch?

You should only drive your car if you are positive the bonnet is securely latched. In some cases a stiff bonnet latch may not mean the bonnet is still held in place, and the cable could suddenly release and pop open your bonnet whilst driving at speed.

In the instance that your bonnet is securely latched but the sensor is faulty, be sure to get the issue resolved quickly, as you will now ignore the warning, even if the bonnet is actually open!
