Is it illegal to drive with the interior lights on?
It's a common belief amongst road users that driving with the interior light on is a crime that could have you pulled over by the police. But the debate that's long persisted in family cars across the country has finally been put to bed.
The question often comes up around this time of year when the nights get darker. But what is the truth: is it illegal or not? According to The AA, there is no law against driving with the interior light on.

However, if the light is distracting or interfering with your vision by reflecting off the inside of the windscreen, it could be a concern for safety. Drivers could be pulled over by the police if the light has contributed to 'careless driving'.
If convicted, careless driving could cost motorists an on-the-spot fine of £100 or 3 penalty points. The most serious cases could be taken to court, where penalties can be even higher.

Passengers using the interior light or a light from another source, such as a mobile phone, also pose a risk to the safety of those in the vehicle. Using the light to check a map or look for items dropped on the floor could all be distracting for the driver.
Bumper's advice is to only use the interior light when you absolutely have to. The responsibility for the safety of everyone in the vehicle is ultimately up to you, so make sure passengers in your vehicle aren't doing something to take your attention off the road.
